The small island of Saint Martin is divided between two countries. The northern half is an overseas collectivity of France called Saint Martin. The southern half, Sint Maarten, is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. There is no border control between the two sides, so you can freely cross from Dutch territory to French territory.
Simply put, it was a dump. There was trash everywhere. The people were rude. The prices were high, and it was difficult to get any assistance whatsoever from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office.
For two entire weeks, we encountered neither another person nor a boat. We awoke to the sounds of mountain goats bleating on the beach, swam in crystal-clear water, and snorkeled among coral reefs teeming with marine life.
After departing the Dominican Republic, we spent a day crossing the Mona Passage, which is notorious for rough seas and thunderstorms.

After tying our boat to the dock, we were greeted by the marina staff. Within just a few minutes, officers from the Armada, the Military Intelligence Service, and the Bureau of Narcotics boarded our boat.
After leaving Georgetown, Bahamas, we sailed towards Cape Santa Maria on Long Island, where Columbus made landfall in 1492.
We left Great Harbor on April 7th and started sailing to Nassau to pick up Grandma Anna, Grandpa Mike, and Aunt Madison. I was so excited to see them. On the way we stopped to anchor for a night at Alders Cay. Then we sailed to Nassau and anchored right in front of Jaws Beach, where the movie Jaws was made.
The Gulf Stream flows from the south, so when the wind blows from the north, in the opposite direction, the waves build and the gulf stream can become dangerous to cross in a sailboat…
